Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department Hosts 3rd Annual Reentry Month Awards Ceremony

By May 9, 2025 No Comments

April is nationally recognized as Reentry Month, a time to honor the individuals and organizations working tirelessly to help formerly incarcerated people transition back into society with dignity and purpose. This year, the Miami-Dade Corrections & Rehabilitation Department (MDCR) celebrated with its 3rd Annual Awards Ceremony, shining a spotlight on those who are making a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

In 2024 alone, more than 24,000 individuals entered the correctional system in Miami-Dade County. Many of them face the uphill battle of repeated incarceration. Through events like this, MDCR reaffirms its unwavering commitment to reducing recidivism by creating pathways to education, employment, and community reintegration.

The ceremony honored the exceptional leaders, volunteers, and community providers who are leading the charge in transforming lives. From educational initiatives and skill-building workshops to trauma-informed counseling and employment programs, each effort plays a critical role in turning second chances into success stories. These services don’t just support reentry—they make successful reentry possible.

A highlight of the event was the inspiring keynote address by Lisa Boatwright, President & CEO of No Inmate Left Behind. Her powerful message emphasized that people should not be defined by their worst moments, but rather by their resilience, growth, and the opportunities they seize when given the chance.

Volunteers were also honored for their tireless dedication. Their compassion and commitment offer more than just support—they provide hope, connection, and a vision for a better future. Whether helping secure housing, job placement, or mentorship, volunteers serve as the backbone of the reentry journey.

Riverside House was proud to be recognized during the event for its collaboration with the FIU Construction Trades program, supported by the Lennar Foundation. Through this partnership, several of our residents have earned OSHA and forklift certifications, equipping them with in-demand skills that open the door to sustainable employment and long-term success.

At Riverside House, we know that reentry doesn’t happen alone. It takes a community—one filled with empathy, opportunity, and the belief that everyone deserves a second chance.
