Empowering Health and Hope at Riverside House

By December 4, 2025 No Comments

On October 25, Riverside House proudly partnered with the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and the University of Miami to host a Health Fair, a day filled with compassion, connection, and true community care. Through this collaboration, residents received essential services that support their physical well-being and their journey toward full restoration.

Clear Vision for a Brighter Future👓

The Frame Project, represented by Ms. Nadien D’Arcangelo, provided free eye exams and prescription glasses, giving 20 residents the life-changing gift of improved sight.

For many, the impact was deeply personal:

  • Mr. Smith shared that his declining vision had prevented him from reading his Bible for years. With tears in his eyes, he shared that receiving glasses meant he could finally read God’s Word clearly again.
  • Mr. Johnson explained that poor vision had affected his confidence in job interviews. With his new glasses, he left renewed in spirit and ready to pursue employment opportunities.

A small tool, a pair of glasses, can open doors to joy, independence, and hope. 💙

Healthcare That Comes With Heart💉

Medical students from the University of Miami volunteered to:

  • Conduct health screenings
  • Monitor blood pressure
  • Connect residents to follow-up care and community health resources

This effort was supported by the Miami Med Reentry Care Clinic (BRIDGE Clinic), a team committed to improving healthcare access for underserved and justice-involved populations. Ms. Stacey Li is leading advocacy efforts to expand their outreach further.

Residents also received help with:

  • Jackson Memorial Hospital financial assistance applications
  • Affordable Care Act (ACA) insurance enrollment
  • Scheduling medical appointments and arranging transportation
  • Connecting with trusted partners for immigration-related concerns

One Event, Many Lives Touched💙

This Health Fair served residents from both our Bureau of Prisons Residential Reentry Program and Riverside Emergency Shelter. Family members who attended were also welcomed with open arms, because when care reaches one person, hope reaches an entire household.

This event beautifully demonstrated what happens when organizations unite with a shared purpose: Dignity is restored, health is strengthened, and hope is renewed.

We are deeply grateful to every partner, volunteer, and advocate who made this day possible. Together, we are transforming lives, one act of care at a time.
